GABORONE:Speaking in a media briefing of the AUSC region 5 games at the University of Botswana Chief Executive Officer Mr Stanley Mutonya extended his heartfelt gratitude to the media houses for excellently covering the Gaborone region five games since they started last week.
Mutonya explained that it is through the media were stars are born and stories of young people are sold that it why it is very important for every media house to cover young people.
“the media has been part of the games covering all the nine sporting codes without any hesitation and for that I am very greatful”.said Mutonya.
He went on further to brief the media about the medal standing of the participating countries, south Africa being the leading country with hundred and six(106) medals, 54 gold medals, 47 silver medals and 5 bronze medals, the host country Botswana currently stands at 3 gold medals, 10 silver medals and 17 bronze medals, making a total of 30 medals.
The least performing country is the Kingdom of Eswatini which has not yet won any medal in all the nine sporting codes.
Motunya went on to touch about the the tree planting ceremony which was held this week at the University of Botswana village explaining the tree planting symbolizes unity of the region and environmental sustainability.
Nineteen trees were planted during the day.
The games he explained that they leave a legacy that will forever live for years.
Because of the Gaborone region 5 games the national stadium running track has been refurbished, Notwane tennis courts, volleyball net and many other sporting areas that had a chance to host the games, something that he explained as the legacy that Batswana should be happy about.
The games continue today till the official ceremony which will be held on Sunday 4pm at UB Indoor Sports Arena.
