Unless by the will of God, no human can stop Letsile Tebogo from breaking the records he comes across, the talented sprinter continues his fine form in the track and has made his name a household name worldwide when speaking about 100m.
Letsile Tebogo has broken his own world U20 100m record with a blistering 9.91s to successfully defend his title and win gold for Botswana at the ongoing U20 World U20 Athletics Championships held at Cali, Colombia.
The 19-year sprinter was breaking his own two records at the same time, the first record being the championship record of 10.00s he set on day one during the heats, the championship record of 10.05s was previously held by Britain’s Adam Gemil in 2012.
Letsile was also breaking his own world U20 record of 9.94s he set a fortnight ago during the heats at the Oregon World Athletics Championships.
Not only did Letsile broke his own record in the under 20 World Championships, but he was also matching the veteran sprinter, Usain Bolt who hit the record back in 2011 in the 100m final at the Golden Spike Athletic meeting held in the Czech Republic.
The Kanye-born sprinter set the record in a style as he stunningly showboated with about 30m left in the race running sideways while pointing fingers and chatting with his rivals, a thing which made rounds on social media just after the race as some athletics opinioned that this delayed him to clock better time.
He spoke to the media that the reason why he showboated is that he draws inspiration from the Jamaican greatest sprinter, Usain Bolt who used to do that back in the days.
“The statement was to come out and enjoy the race, if someone took it as disrespect, I’m really sorry, I saw the fans and it was for everyone watching at home to enjoy the race, to remind them a little bit about what Usain Bolt did back in the days. He is my idol, the person I look up to’, Tebogo told the media.
Following his 9.94s world record at the Oregon World Championships a fortnight ago and the 10.12s fifth-place finish at Wanda Diamond League back in May, Letsile came to the championships as the title holder and was dubbed the favorite to defend it and did not disappoint as he successfully defended it in style.
It was Botswana’s second 100m title in a major athletics competition and third overall at the competitions courtesy of him and the 800m sensational sprinter, Nijel Amos.
The Lefika Athletics Club star performer is in his own league as he now records sub 10 seconds in his races lately, he clocked 9.96s back in April on his home soil during the Gaborone International Meet and went on to clock 9.94s at the World Athletics Championships few weeks back and now he recorded a personal best time of 9.91s.
For the moment Letsile is only 19 years and is content with smashing the junior records, now he is being referred to as Usain Bolt who broke the world record when he was 23 and with time, he will be ruling the 100m as this was witnessed when he outclassed the likes of Jamaica’s Yohan Blade and Canada’s Aaron Brown at the World Athletics Championships in the heats.
Letsile finished second in 200m to earn Botswana a silver medal with a Championship Record tie of 19.96s. behind Israel`s Blessing Afrifah
