Jwaneng Galaxy has been crowned 2019/2020 BTC Premiership Champions for the first time in history since its inception in 2015.
The Jwaneng Galaxy Botswana Premier League(BPL) championship celebrations follows a ruling by Botswana Football Association (BFA)to declare the 2019 /2020 football season as concluded with the league tables as it is in light of the corona virus pandemic.
In an effort to return football post covid-19,the football authority has opted to end the leagues and crown Galaxy champions of the elite league.
The coval covid-19 scare has led to the football association suspending and freezing the football activities in the country thus reaching this conclusion.
BFA President Mc Clean Letshwiti had in the past argued that for the leagues to return the association needs over P300 million to observe Covid-19 Safety Protocols.
Moreover Letswiti further opined that they only had two options either to award Jwaneng Galaxy winners or continue with the league which in his view is mission impossible.
Letshwiti had set up a committee which met to decide the future of 2019/2020 season. The committee has since voted to instill Jwaneng Galaxy as 2019/2020 BTC Premiership Champions.
Jwaneng Galaxy publicity desk released at statement following the developments in Botswana football.
“Following the early ending of the 2019/2020 Football season, Jwaneng Galaxy was declared the BTC Premiership Champions. This was by virtue of being at the top of the table after 20 games before the COVID-19 break. It is certainly unfortunate that the remaining matches could not be played under the circumstances. Fair play to the other title chasing teams for an interesting and competitive season, reads the statement.”
Jwaneng Galaxy played 20 games, won 12 times, drawn 5 matches and only lost 3 with 41 points and 10 fixtures remaining.
Interestingly,Galaxy was only a point ahead of the then defending Champions Township Rollers four points clear of number four Security Systems.
Meanwhile Tafic SC,Molepolole City Stars and Miscellaneous have been relegated to First Division while Masitaoka and Sua Flamingos will join the elites at Botswana Premier League following an automatic promotion.
BFA has since set up a committee to deal with the modalities of the promotional playoffs from the lower tier football.
