BY:Phodiso Gaebepe

GABORONE: Gaoleseletse Gasekgonwe won big at the Mascom Volleyball League Awards 2018 which were held at Fairgrounds  (Annex Hall) on Wednesday 28 November as she won three individual awards.

This was an exquisite, Honorable occasion and  the most important in the Volleyball calendar as it was graced by

Honorables Such as Minister of Youth Empowerment Sport and Culture Development, Hon. Thapelo Olopeng, Chief Executive Officer of Mascom Mr Jose` Vieira Couceiro and of course the President of the Botswana Volleyball Federation, Mr Daniel Molaodi and other important people in sports and in the corporate world.

The mandate of the night was to recognize and award the very individuals and teams who sacrificed their time  and dedicated their energy to make the league a success and exciting.

As the word of God says ” as the earth remains seed time and harvest shall not cease”. It was a time of harvest for teams for players whom like I said earlier have dedicated their time into the sport.

This was a league with a bit of history in the female side as there was a change that has never been, we know that for a very long time Kutlwano Volleyball Club and Mafolofolo Volleyball Club has been dominating the sport for a very long time.

The competition has always been between the two teams and others just participating.

This particular league was a different one as we saw a team emerge from the dust to claim victory, to change the set up of things in the Volleyball world in Botswana. Mag Stimela ladies team ate the current champions of the Mascom Volleyball League.

In the male category we saw Police VI volleyball club claiming the championship. Both teams walking away with P100,000. In the female category, the bronze medal went to Mafolofolo Volleyball Club winning P60, 000 and silver to Kutlwano Volleyball Club winning P70, 000.

The male category , the bronze medal went to Kalavano volleyball club claiming P60,000 also. Silver medals to BDF VI also claiming P70,000 for their teams.

In the individual awards, that is where we saw a true gem. The awards were given according to positions of play in the court. From best setter to server.

The awards were given to people who excelled in different positions and the best female attacker went to Gaoleseletse Gasekgonwe of Mag Stimela VC.

The best attacker male category went to Phemelo Lekoko of Kalavango VC.

The best female blocker went to Tshiamo Chakalisa of Kutlwano Volleyball Club.

The best male blocker went to Moemedi Siphambe of Police VI VC.

The best female setter went to Kelebogile Mahupela of Mafolofolo VC.

The best male setter went to Kesaobaka Lenkopane of BDF VI VC.

The best female server went to Gaoleseletse Gasekgonwe of Mag Stimela VC.

Best male server went to Phenyo Thabang of Police VI VC.

The best female Libero went to Gontle Goirwang of Mafolofolo VC.

The best male Libero went to Meffrey Chindumbo.

Most Valuable Player female went to Gaoleseletse Gasekgonwe of Mag Stimela VC.

Most Valuable Player male went to Alec Engleton of Police VI VC.

Best female coach award went to Maboka Molefi and best male coach award went to Shimaka Ngwanaotsile.

In the Media category we saw Calistas Kolantsho of Mmegi winning sports writer of the year in the print media category.

Radio reporter of the year went to Monnakgotla Mojaki of Gabs FM.

Camera person of the year went to Kefilwe Keosentse of Botswana Television.

Television Reporter of the year went to Lydia Poloko of Botswana Television.

To sum up the night we saw a face appearing a number of times when awards were being awarded.  A face of a player who gave her all in this league. A face of talent and leadership, a face of non other than of Gaoleseletse Gasekgonwe, a player who received more awards on the night.  Gaoleseletse of Mag Stimela VC, the reining champions, the history makers won three (3) awards on the night .

She won best female attacker, best female server and Most Valuable Player female.

She was indeed a star of the night as she was the only player who won more more than one award of the night.
