Following a devastating week after the announcement by the Botswana Premier League(BPL) that the league prize money issues are yet to be resolved, this left local football followers in disarray.
Although not all hope is lost at last because we still have the Debswana first division as an alternative.
Frankly, for a while now most football supporters opted to watch mvela games because of their entertaining football and the competition that is brought by the teams every week.
Politically free football is another factor that adds a cherry on top of the cake, teams pitch up to the games and games are played as planned till end of the season unlike in the elite league, there is always a pending case to be solved.
The introduction of Mochudi Centre Chiefs to the First Division South (FDS) and the acquisition of Killer giants by Masitaoka, and Holy Ghost can’t be left out, just made matters worse for the premier league, Magosi is a big brand in Botswana and every one even their enemies are always eager to watch them.
Notably the Kgatleng giants made the league more marketable through sports radio shows as they were always aired in every show across all radio stations and other media outlets.
At Debswana First Division, sold out games are a norm nowadays and the atmosphere at the games is spectacular, it caters for family outings in a Saturday afternoon.Big games like Chiefs and Santos bring in numbers to the playing grounds.
Recently a new tournament was launched, FDS Top 8, although it was postponed to a later date it was a sign of moving forward and visionary thinking to take the game to the next level by providing limitless entertainment regardless of budget constraints they may face.A welcomed addition considering the amount of time spent not having first division football taste while awaiting the commercially motivated BPL to conclude.
The only highlight that is saving BPL is the television ( BTV).Sadly though it is really not doing a great deal into broadcasting the games as the supporters are not pleased with the content they provide.
Let’s all believe that one day glory days in our football fraternity will be back.In the meantime,Debswana First Division soccer is where our hearts are.
