GABORONE:Tennis Team Botswana at the ongoing AUSC Region 5 Games has managed to rake in 3 medals into the blue,black and white medal basket to help Botswana come 3rd in overall medal position gaping Zambia with 21 medals.
Botswana as per requirement of the tournament’s rules and regulations thrown to the court 4 tennis ballers being Captain Leungo Mannawo,Tshepo Mosarwe and the Tsiang siblings Tshegofatso and Tshololofelo.
From day 1 of order of play Botswana competed in all categories,men singles,women singles,man doubles,women doubles and mixed doubles which eventually geared the team for team event participation after a good showpiece.
Botswana pocketed bronze from team event after edging over Mozambique in the playoffs.Tshegofatso settled for bronze from woman singles after a tough mountainous battle against Beverly Matsiwe of Zimbabwe where she lost 4-6,6-4,6-3 in the semi-finals.Beverly went on to get second spot to travel to Zim necklaced with a silver medal after losing against South African’s Delien Kleinhanis.
In women’s doubles Botswana’s double impact duo Tshegofatso and Mannawo grabbed silver with 2 hands after a memorable battle against the promising and uprising tennis stars in Southern Africa.South Africa and Zimbabwe became gold and bronze medalist respectively.
In men singles Botswana was unfortunate not to get any silverware as Zimbabwe,South Africa and Lesotho got Gold,Silver and bronze respectively.In men doubles South Africa,Zimbabwe and Mozambique got all the silverware on offer.Botswana’mixed doubles team lost in the 3rd play playoff against Mozambique where South Africa won gold and silver drifted by Mozambique.
Speaking in an interview with Sportsnation,a representative from team Botswana Tsholofelo says he is happy with the outcomes of the tourney and he believes there is always a room for growth and improvement.
“we are really satisfied with what we got ,as a host nation it was really tough and under pressure to get at least 1 medal and im happy that we surpassed everyones expectation.”laments Tsholofelo.Botswana as of 4pm today according to region 5 official mobile application medal tally stands at 30 in position three after 2 gold medals 10 silvers and 6 bronze medals.
Botswana is followed by Zambia with 11 medals.South Africa is leading the pack with 106 medal necklaced including 54 gold medals.Angola comes second with 29 medals dominated by 10 gold medals.
Tennis team Botswana in total got position three after collecting 1 silver and two bronze medals against 9 participating countries.South Africa dominated by getting 6 medals all gold expect for one which is silver to claim number one spot of 18 medals issued followed by Mldluli Sibanda`s Zimbabwe with also got a share of 18 medals to get 6,1 gold,3 silver and 2 bronzes.Mozambique,Angola,Lesotho each got one medal respectively.
