BOBA NEEDS P2 MILLION FOR BOXING RETURN

BY:Kabelo Seleka

Botswana Boxing Association (BOBA)needs approximately P2 million to return to ring dancing following the covid-19 scare and gloves down, says BOBA Vice President Gilbert Khunwane.

It has been five months now since the last taste of Botswana boxing in March 7 through its famous fortnightly staged BOBA-inter club tourneys.

The local boxing’s return is earmarked to be staged on the 8th of August. In the much anticipated return, the boxing association has estimated to spend Pulas amounting to 2 million.

BOBA TO FOLLOW COVID-19 PREVENTION PROTOCOLS

BOBA Vice President Gilbert Khunwane told SPORTSNATION in a telephone interview that the boxing association will follow the guidelines for covid-19 prevention.

In following the guidelines,Gilbert Khunwane lamented that they will use the August 8 inter club tournament as a pilot project.

He further articulated that boxing fanatics will not be allowed at the tournament.

“At this pilot project things will not be the same, fans will not be allowed, social distancing will be practiced and other measures such as temperature taking and sanitizing will be done, communicated Gilbert Khunwane.”

BOBA  TESTING  BOXERS WILL RESULT IN P2 MILLION COST

BOBA VP Gilbert Khunwane has proposed to SPORTSNATION that as the local amateur boxing authority they intend to test every boxer for Covid-19 at the tournaments.

The VP revealed that in order to follow all these guidelines for the much awaited boxing return, the association will be costed an estimated P2 million up until the championship tenure.

“We have communicated with BNSC about the guidelines,as we await feedback,we are estimating to be spending P2 million until national championship, indicated Gilbert Khunwane.”

BOBA TO CONSIDER NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

With five months now lost due to the corona virus scare, the association in essence has not hosted possibly at least ten inter club tourney calling for measures to consider minimum requirements by boxers to compete at the National Championship, opined Gilbert Khunwane.

“Usually what happens towards Championship,we sit down and make some considerations in requirements,so possibly we are going to consider reducing the number of bouts required because of corona, asserted Gilbert Khunwane.”

When commenting on the issue,Professional boxing Promoter/Coach Larona Francis argued;

“I think it may amount or be equivalent to that(P2million) to run a league, and the amount could go up because of the resources and equipment needed to observe Covid-19 protocols.
For pilot tournament on August 8th,I think it will be too soon. With just the general knowledge I have, Botswana is yet to reach the peak of the pandemic.
Many Clubs are institutional, therefore they may find it difficult to resume training during the SOE,as their personnel may be engaged in the operation of Covid-19.
I am also not sure if BOBA has already started embarking on boxing gym inspections to see if they are safe for operation.”
