Botswana’s boxing superstar Steven Bagwasi has been crowned the new WBF featherweight champion after outclassing Tanzania’s Said Chino for the international title bout at the Scud Fight night held in UB last week Friday.
Small as fondly known secured the belt at his second title shot attempt after suffering his only defeat at the hands of Ayanda Nkosi in 2018, a year after he joined the professional ranks.
The 27-year-old Bagwasi featured in the main bout to walk away with the victory against the talented Chino in a blockbuster show revealing Botswana’s superstar boxer as the champion.
When speaking to SPORTSNATION, Bagwasi alluded that claiming a WBF belt has always been a dream. He added, “I am very happy about this because this is a dream come true.”
Bagwasi further stressed that “It(the belt) means everything to me and to my team because now the world knows about me.”
When quizzed about unifying belts, Bagwasi said he intends to dominate the sport of boxing on every front.
“This is just the beginning,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, the undercards featured Botswana’s Romeo Nkisa who won his debut bout against South Africa’s Manelo Sithole, Bond Boxing Gym’s Tefo Letshokgwane also featured by stunning Drad Boxing’s Tshephang “Gearbox” Babui winning by a split decision.
Botswana boxing top attraction Mmusi Tswiige won his debut professional bout against South Africa’s Semphiwe Ntombela in the welterweight six-rounder contest by unanimous decision. Botswana’s newest addition to professional boxing ranks Boifang Kenaope has been held to a draw by South African Cedrick Chauke after four rounds of the super lightweight contest while the main supporting bout also produced a draw between WBF Champion Moabi Ngaka and South Africa’s Selena Maduna.
Bagwasi is set to defend his title within six months as per WBF play rules and regulations.
